Educational Opportunities

Educational OpportunitiesWhatever your education goals, the MCC Education Department is here for you. If you need credits to finish your high school diploma, we will assess your needs and help you to complete those classes while preparing you for the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE). If you want to study for the GED, our teachers have the expertise and materials to guide you. If your goal is a college course or courses, we may be able to help you with tuition, or, through the AmeriCorps program, you could earn money to take classes or pay off an existing school loan. If you need to improve your English language skills, we have ESL classes that will help you along your path.

Monday through Thursday, the field education teachers visit the crews in the field to provide project-based or place-based lessons that integrate fieldwork and academics. Two afternoons a week and all day Friday, corpsmembers participate in classes in a more traditional setting, where the classes range from high school studies to ESL to landscape design.

Restoration and Ecosystem Management

National Park ServiceAre you interested in working with the National Park Service? Our NPS program is another of our AmeriCorps programs here at MCC. The corpsmembers in this program are mentored one on one with a National Park Service employee. They are engaged in numerous environmental projects located throughout the Marin Headlands, and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The corpsmembers receive housing in the Presidio in San Francisco as part of being a part of this crew. It is a one-year program, and when completed the corpsmembers earn an Education award of $4725. The award can be used for future college expenditures, or to pay off existing loans.

For Earth's Sake

For Earth's Sake (FES) is a mobile resource center that delivers environmental education resources and materials to schools and youth organizations throughout Marin County. The FES project was established to assist teachers in Marin County in creating a new generation of environmental stewards while providing a positive alternative of re-use for the "waste" streams of Marin's business and industrial community. The project involves the collection of materials from companies throughout Marin. These materials are items or excess that would otherwise be 'thrown out', are collected and delivered to schools. The van also contains a library of resource materials, which the teachers can use for their classrooms.

Project ReGeneration

Project ReGeneration is a unique environmental service and learning program for 11- 17-year-old youth. This exciting program teaches future generations of environmental stewards through a combination of outdoor education, community service and recreational activities. Project ReGeneration (ReGen) members have the opportunity to make the summer a positive experience and also earn a stipend, learn about the environment, obtain new skills and work ethics, successfully work in a diverse group, make new friends and gain self-confidence.

Goals of Project ReGeneration:

Youth will:

  • Acquire an ethic of service and make positive changes in the community
  • Discover the importance of environmental issues such as recycling and habitat restoration, through hands-on, experiential learning activities
  • Learn to incorporate responsible behaviors into everyday life
  • Make new friends from culturally and economically diverse backgrounds
  • Participate in fun, educational and unique recreational activities

Projects:

Approximately half the day consists of environmental service projects and the other half, environmental education and recreation activities. High school teams participate in more service—75% service projects and 25% education and recreation activities. ReGen teams serve in natural settings throughout Marin County including: the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Marin Municipal Water District, Angel Island State Park, Mount Tamalpais State Park, Point Reyes National Seashore, and Marin County Open Space District. The following are examples of service, education and recreation projects, and activities from past Project ReGeneration summers:
Community Service:

  • Recycling projects and "waste characterizations"
  • Trail maintenance and construction
  • Community beautification and litter abatement
  • Stream restoration projects
  • Native plant habitat restoration and exotic plant removal
  • Youth-selected community service projects (i.e. car wash for the Marin Humane Society, meal preparation and service for a soup kitchen, and bake sale for San Rafael Library)
  • Energy conservation, residential energy audits, and sustainability audits in small businesses

Education:

  • Environmental education lessons on subjects such as recycling, watersheds, and energy.
  • Typical tours: Bay Model, Marin Headlands Lighthouse, Natural History Museum & Steinhardt Aquarium, Marin Recycling Center, Exploratorium, etc.
  • Scientific surveys in creeks and watersheds, and at beaches
  • Teambuilding activities and challenge course
  • Reading, writing, and discussion of environmental and social topics
  • Journal writing

Recreation:

  • Outdoor sports and hiking
  • Interpretive nature hikes
  • Arts and crafts
  • Indoor rock climbing

Special Projects:

  • “Curb Your Carbon” Campaign (a county-wide energy reduction campaign)
  • Media Project (creating radio stories led by the Teen Environmental Media Project (TEMN)
  • Energy Surveys and Sustainability Audits (small businesses)
  • Adopted Areas (beaches, city and county parks, and creeks)
  • Sandy Beach Monitoring (sand crab monitoring)
  • Service-Learning & Civic Engagement lessons and projects

Although many portions of ReGen are recreational, team members will also be expected to fully participate in all aspects of the program including the service and education portions. Service projects and hiking can be strenuous, the weather is usually very warm, and members must be in uniforms and wear safety gear at all times.

What more could you ask for?

Perhaps a stipend and an opportunity to earn high school environmental elective science credits!

Member Benefits:

Project ReGeneration members will have the opportunity to spend the summer in spectacular outdoor environments, learn how to recycle, learn how to work in a team, gain self-confidence, a positive service ethic, learn that each of us can make a difference in the community, meet new friends, and in addition, receive a modest stipend for their service and dedication to the community (high school students: $500; junior high school students: $300). Also, high school participants have the opportunity to earn environmental science elective credits through the John Muir Charter School.
