San
Rafael, CA - The Marin Conservation Corps has just received
the highest honor from the California Charter Academy - the
"Outstanding Program Award" for the year 2000. In a ceremony
held last Saturday, January 13th, 2001 in Ontario, California,
Marilee Eckert, Executive Director at MCC, was given this
highly prestigious award on behalf of MCC's Education Department.
She stated, "I was thrilled to have MCC recognized for our
Education Program. Our affiliation with the California Charter
Academy has allowed us to develop a plan that truly integrates
a formal education into all aspects of our programs. We can
provide an alternative for young adults who failed in a traditional
educational setting. They learn within the context of real
life situations, and they can complete the work required for
their high school diploma."
MCC
joined the California Charter Academy, as a charter member,
in September of 1999. It is one of more than 40 sites located
throughout California. Since it's beginnings, MCC has had
24 graduates receive their diploma through this program. When
asked how she felt about receiving this award, Loretta Karstetter,
Director of Education at MCC, stated, " I am proud to have
our program acknowledged in that way. It is a tribute to our
corpsmembers and the hard work that they do, as well as the
teachers on our staff that have signed such wonderful curriculum."
Steven
Cox, Executive Director of the California Charter Academy,
was pleased to give the award to MCC: " We polled our workers
to see who they felt should receive the award. They determined
that MCC was easy to work with, and it was a program that
was striving to provide a good education. MCC has an outstanding
group of people to work with."
The
Marin Conservation Corps was founded in 1982 as a job-training
program for the youth of Marin County. It employs youth between
the ages of 18 and 30 in environmental work projects that
serve to preserve the environment of Marin County.
