MCC Recycling Crew Maiden Voyage

For Immediate Release: August 31, 2000

Contact: info@marincc.org, (415) 454-4554

San Rafael, CA - An historic 'Maiden Voyage' was undertaken yesterday, Wednesday, August 30th, as the Marin Conservation Corps Recycling Crew 'rode' over to Angel Island for the first time. MCC has worked out an arrangement with the Park Service, so that their Recycling trucks can load onto a barge, which will then take them over to the island. The truck will then pick up from the Island, items to be recycled, such as aluminum cans, and glass and plastic bottles, that have been left in toters. MCC also built and installed the toters for Angel Island.

The arrangement to pick up the recyclable items has been several years in the making. According to MCC Recycling Crew Supervisor, Ardis Ashton, "We have been working on this for 2 years. It is very exciting to me to see this happen. I am very proud of our crew, and what we have accomplished."

The recycling crew will coordinate with the Park Service, on a weekly basis, on exactly when they can go to the island. The tides have to be just right for the barge to make the trip successfully.

MCC also does the recycling for all of the other State and National Parks located in Marin County, as well as for the Parks in the City of San Rafael.

For more information regarding the new Recycling Service, or the Marin Conservation Corps, please call (415) 454-4554.
