AmeriCorps REM Crew Supervisor

SUMMARY:

The AmeriCorps Restoration and Ecosystem Management (REM) Crew Supervisor provides leadership to a team of 12 AmeriCorps members charged with the implementation of a wide-range of habitat restoration, volunteer outreach and recycling projects. These projects primarily take place in lands managed by the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Point Reyes National Seashore and the Marin Municipal Water District under the direction of agency natural resources professionals. The AmeriCorps REM Crew Supervisor coordinates with natural resource staff from these agencies to ensure that AmeriCorps members placed in these agencies participate in a high-quality service and training program. As a one-year professional development and environmental leadership program for young adults aged 18-30, MCC’s AmeriCorps REM Crew Supervisor is charged with implementing a multi-faceted and dynamic program for the AmeriCorps members.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Supervision:

  • Provide daily supervision of 12 AmeriCorps members including enforcing program rules, evaluating performance, and completing daily paperwork. Effectively facilitating personal and professional development among the corpsmembers is a key component of supervision for this program.
  • Ensure that members and site mentors establish effective mechanisms for communicating monthly service plans, accomplishment tracking, and recording service hours.
  • Lead occasional “project days,” supervising members and community volunteers in habitat restoration and ecological monitoring projects

Program Development:

  • Serve as liaison between MCC/AmeriCorps and site supervisors (or “mentors”) from the public land management agencies.
  • Collaborate with staff from agency partners to assess and evaluate program milestones and outcomes and to review member performance.
  • Work on a team to develop program-specific trainings for AmeriCorps members, particularly with the AmeriCorps Youth in Environmental Service (YES) Crew Supervisor.
  • Coordinate several one-day community service events per year, such as Make a Difference Day, MLK jr. Day of Service and National Youth Service Day.

Administration:

  • Develop and maintain tracking systems for program evaluations, objectives completed and member hours.
  • Compile data and submit quarterly AmeriCorps reports.

Experience in with California ecology, current knowledge of conservation corps and non-profits are desirable.

Summer 2008 Employment Opportunity:
Project ReGeneration Team Supervisor

PROJECT REGENERATION is MCC's summer service learning and environmental education program for youth aged 11-17.  The program consists of two, four-week sessions engaging youth in recycling, habitat restoration and community service projects throughout Marin County.  For the summer 2008, the program will operate with seven Supervisors leading teams of 10 participants.  The participants will be grouped into “High School 1” (grades 9 & 10), “High School 2” (grades 11 & 12), and “Junior High” (grades 6 to 8) teams.  Project ReGeneration is unique among summer youth programs in that participants engage in service projects and receive a stipend for their efforts.  Formal education, hands-on learning, team-building, and recreational activities are central to the program.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Each Project ReGeneration Team Supervisor works under the direction of the AmeriCorps Program Coordinator, providing daily supervision to 10 Project ReGeneration members, planning daily logistics and leading environmental service projects, driving a 12-passenger van, and educating the team on environmental and science subjects.  The Project ReGeneration Supervisor must be available for training (June 2 to 13, 2008) and for the duration of the program (June 16 through August 8, 2008), and evaluation day on (August 11, 2008).

  1. Provide daily supervision of 10 members; providing a safe environment, enforcing program rules, providing performance evaluations, conducting disciplinary procedures, and facilitating personal development.
  2. Oversee the daily environmental education program; including science education in the field and leading group discussions.
  3. Provide mentorship and guidance to one of MCC's Youth in Environmental Service (YES) Crew AmeriCorps members who aid in the facilitation the environmental education program and supervision of members within the teams.
  4. Provide guidance and mentorship to ReGen members in the areas of personal and academic development, community service ethics, professionalism, environmental ethics, recycling issues, and public relations.
  5. Coordinate daily team logistics including driving to the service project site, gathering materials, and outlining the daily and weekly work plans with sponsoring agencies around Marin County.
  6. Ensure all safety procedures are followed at all times.
  7. Track and compile project accomplishment data on a daily basis.
  8. Maintain daily tracking of member accomplishments and attendance.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Experience serving and volunteering in the community, must possess a strong service ethic, and be able to instill this ethic into team members.
  2. Effective conflict resolution and classroom/team management skills for youth.
  3. Experience teaching or facilitating education in an outdoor setting.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

SUMMARY:

The AmeriCorps Programs Coordinator provides leadership and support in the coordination of special events, seasonal projects and ongoing programs that support the goals of MCC’s recycling and youth education projects, by coordinating the activities of the AmeriCorps YES, REM and For Earth Sake Programs (FES) and the Project ReGeneration Summer Youth Program that engages over 120 children aged 11-17 in environmental service-learning projects.

  • Provide daily supervision of 2 Supervisors from YES and REM Programs, including enforcing program rules, evaluating performance, facilitating personal and professional development and completing daily paperwork.
  • Provide continual guidance to supervisors in developing lesson plans, delivering effective presentations, and teaching appropriate environmental content.
  • Collaborate with supervisors on ongoing coordination of  daily crew logistics including transportation, staffing, and materials as needed.
  • Provide coverage for absent supervisors on projects and presentations when needed
  • Coordinate MCC’s summer youth program, Project ReGeneration, a conservation- and recycling-based community service and environmental education program serving nearly 140 youth ages 11-17. The AmeriCorps Program Coordinator is responsible for overall program coordination, including designing the ReGen orientation, coordinating the work calendar, designing tracking and reporting systems, and setting the tone for a successful program.
  • Coordinate the training and supervise four to five Project ReGen Supervisors during the summer and provide field support and coverage, as needed.
  • Provide leadership and coordinate community service projects aimed at youth, such as Earth Day and the MLK Jr. Day of Service.
  • Develop networks with other youth service agencies and volunteer centers to ensure MCC’s youth programs effectively supplement regional efforts.
  • Provide administrative leadership to Recycling and Environmental AmeriCorps Programs as the site administrator of the Corps Network “Ed Award” AmeriCorps program.
  • Serve as a liaison to MCC’s Human Resources Department, assisting with recruitment activities and hiring procedures for REAP corpsmembers.
  • Monitor progress of programs and draft reports for state granting agencies, when appropriate.

SUMMARY:

The Grants Writer works closely with MCC’s Development Director and management team. The Grants Writer is responsible for the administration of the grants program, including prospect research, concept development, writing and submitting grant proposals and reports, monitoring progress, and tracking and reporting grant results.

Natural Resources Crew Supervisor

SUMMARY

The Natural Resources Crew Supervisor will make significant contributions to providing a positive work environment that values diversity and fosters a commitment to teamwork and learning. The NRCS will empower members to achieve their educational goals and assist the education department in teaching classes in field and classroom settings.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. The Natural Resource Crew Supervisor (NRCS) is responsible for all aspects of supervision for a crew of 8-12 young adults.  The NRCS will lead the crew in successfully completing natural resource projects, including habitat restoration, fire fuel reduction, creek maintenance and restoration and trail building.

Recycling Staff Driver

BACKGROUND

The Marin Conservation Corps provides professional job and educational development opportunities for youth ages 11-30 years old through a variety of environmentally focused community service based programs. The Recycling and Environmental AmeriCorps Program (REAP) department operates a multifaceted recycling collection and education program and an environmental restoration and community service AmeriCorps program. MCC operates an extensive recycling collection program that is vital to agencies that manage Marin’s parks and preserved lands. Over 300,000 pounds of beverage containers and paper is collected each year from 350 collection points around the County. In addition, MCC’s corpsmembers outreach and educate thousands of students, businesses, and community volunteers about recycling and environmental stewardship.

The Recycling Staff Driver is responsible for the completion of daily routes, special event collections, and recycling bin maintenance. The Driver is responsible for safety and operation inspections of vehicles and other equipment every day. The Driver is accompanied by 1-2 assistant corpsmembers each day on set routes that span Marin County. The Driver supervises the assistants on the route and ensures that safe work practices are followed at all times. During the routes, the drivers track specific information about the bins and route on paper or hand-held electronic device and report route problems to the supervisor.

MCC provides recycling services to over a dozen special events throughout the year. Some events require Drivers to staff events on weekend days and supervise corpsmember assistants during the event.

In addition to recycling route collection, the Driver and assistants sort recyclables into various material types on a daily basis and periodically performs routine maintenance on recycling bins in the field, constructs bins recycling bins at MCC’s Shop, and participates in other projects as assigned. Some other projects may include public outreach about recycling, community service projects, and recycling collection data aggregation.

The Driver is expected to support the Supervisor in maintaining a safe and positive learning and motivating environment for corpsmember enrolled in MCC’s program and act as a role model at all times. In addition, the Driver is a expected to professionally represent MCC and the recycling program when encountering sponsors and the public during any project.

Route Assignments and Special Projects:

  • Efficient and safe completion of routes as assigned, which includes driving specified routes, emptying recycling bins, tracking field data and problems
  • Supervise corpsmember assistants assigned to routes and other projects, including weekend special events and recycling sorting
  • Ensure safety procedures are followed on routes and during other projects
  • Lead recycling bin set up, collection and breakdown during weekend special events
  • Perform routine and special maintenance on recycling bins using hand power tools
  • Provide a safe and positive working environment for corpsmembers assisting with projects
  • Represent MCC professionally with sponsors and during all projects

Administration:

  • Complete vehicle safety and operation inspection paperwork at the start of each day
  • Complete route data collection on paper and/or hand-held electronic device for every route and special event
  • Assist with the set up of new recycling clients and tracking of new recycling bin locations
  • Participate in weekly meetings with Supervisor to plan and strategize for recycling program
  • Support Supervisor in the motivation and development of corpsmembers participating in MCC’s training program

  • high school diploma or GED and/or appropriate amount of previous work experience
  • Evidence of progressive responsibility and working independently in previous job positions

  • First Aid/CPR certification within 2 months of hire
  • Class C, California Driver License with one point or less on DMV record
  • Ability to be reliable and willing to limit vacation time during program’s busy period (May 1st - October 31st).Vacation requests with 2-weeks notice will be approved in relation to other staff requests and time of year.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands and work environment described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is required to walk; use hands to operate objects, tools, or controls. Also, the employee may lift up 50 lbs, pull up to 150 lbs, reach with hands and arms, and perform simple grasping and fine manipulation. Other situations include sitting at a desk using a computer and in meetings; driving or riding in a flat bed truck for long periods of time; exiting and entering the truck frequently to collect recycling material; intermittently twist to reach equipment surrounding desk and climbing ladder to flat bed truck.

COMPENSATION

  • $11 an hour/ 40 hours a week and full benefits (medical, dental, vision)
  • Schedule: Monday-Thursday 7:45-4:30 and Friday 8-3:30 most weeks and some scheduled weekend special events required throughout the year
