PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Marin Conservation Corps (MCC) is a local non-profit job training, education and development program serving young adults.  MCC assists young adults in the development of basic job competencies and qualifying work experience for employment in a wide variety of fields. Participants work on crews implementing projects in natural resource conservation, ecological restoration, recycling, service learning projects with children, and public land beautification in Marin County. MCC helps corpsmembers to enhance their academic and vocational abilities and assists them in formulating and progressing toward their long-term employment and educational goals.

The For Earth's Sake (FES) corpsmember is responsible for helping to coordinate MCC's mobile resource center that delivers environmental education resources and creative reuse art materials to schools and youth organizations throughout Marin County. The FES corpsmember works with other corpsmembers to present recycling education through creative reuse art presentations in elementary school classrooms as well as during lunchtime activities. Materials for the resource center and art projects are solicited from local businesses through an extensive outreach program. Under the direction of the Recycling Education Supervisor, the FES corpsmember participates in all activities that support the For Earth’s Sake program including driving the FES truck, organizing the FES bay, and other activities as needed.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Type: One Year, Full time, Non-Residential

Responsibilities:

  • Solicit school participation for FES mobile resource van deliveries and organize classroom presentations schedule.
  • Establish new contacts and maintain contacts with existing program clients and community members.
  • Solicit and acquire an ongoing supply of diverse materials from local businesses.
  • Engage in creative reuse art projects for classroom presentations.
  • Work with program staff to maintain effectiveness of FES program.
  • Maintain FES bay organization.

Administration:

  • Provide input for tracking systems.
  • Compile data and submit monthly status reports.
  • Represent program and organization at a variety of meetings and public forums.

Qualifications:

  • Strong communication skills.
  • Strong creative and artistic background.
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize tasks.
  • Outreach experience desired.
  • Professionalism: ability to represent MCC to public
  • Desire to teach creative reuse activities to youth
  • Clean driver’s license (3 year U.S. driving history with 1 point or less on driving record).

COMPENSATION

This is a full time corpsmember position at $9.00 to $10.00 per hour (Based on experience). Applicant(s) may be able to qualify for an Americorps Education Award of $4,750.

Community Recycling Crew Corpsmembers

PROGRAM INFORMATION

The Marin Conservation Corps (MCC) is a non-profit organization providing job training and education to adults ages 18-28. The Community Recycling Crew (CRC) has implemented a wide variety of projects with parks, schools, businesses and neighborhoods over the past 8 years. Recyclables are collected from over 300 parkland sites, non-profit organizations and other recreational lands throughout the county. MCC’s recycling program also provides recycling services to several large-scale and small-scale public events and fairs while corpsmembers outreach to the community’s residents and businesses during the events.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collection of recyclables from parklands and recreational areas throughout Marin County, including driving to location, sorting of materials, and assessing maintenance needs of MCC’s recycling bins
  • Ensure the recycling materials are measured through established monthly tracking system
  • Work closely with other crew members during routes, outreach events and special projects
  • Outreach to community organizations, schools, businesses, and residents and provide recycling information and creative reuse solutions in a variety of settings
  • Promote sustainability to the MCC community through recycling lessons, management of a recycling incentives program, and other activities
  • Work with other crew members to construct recycling bins

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Interest in conservation issues, recycling and waste reduction
  • Interest in affecting change through Community Service
  • Enthusiastic about developing new skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to work well with diverse groups of people
  • U.S. Citizen or legal resident, between the ages of 18 and 28 years
  • One year commitment
  • Interest in career development and participation in work-study program

Natural Resources Crew Corpsmember

The Marin Conservation Corps (MCC) was the first local conservation corps in the country, founded in 1982. Throughout the years, corpsmembers at MCC have built and maintained miles of trails, removed tons of non-native and fire-hazard vegetation, cleared creeks of obstructions for flood control, and restored riparian and terrestrial habitats throughout the entire county. Over 2000 corpsmembers have been through MCC’s program since its inception. Today corpsmembers continue this work for most of the resource agencies across Marin County. Working with agencies such as the Marin Municipal Water District, Marin County Open Space District, Point Reyes National Seashore and many others, corpsmembers work to keep Marin’s wild lands accessible, safe and beautiful. Projects range from a single day to several weeks in length and offer the opportunity for training in hand and power tool use, plant identification and general job training. MCC also offers the opportunity to receive a high school diploma as well as an intensive English as a Second Language program.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work cooperatively with a diverse group of people
  • Report daily to a crew supervisor and carry out all assigned tasks
  • Make a one-year, full-time commitment to the program
  • Participate in both the field work and education aspects of the program
  • Do strenuous work in all kinds of weather – heat, rain, wind, etc.
