| What: |
Marin Conservation Corps will be distributing information at a number of locations in response to the national campaign to heighten awareness about recycling. If you can’t stop by, then consider taking the recycling pledge. |
| Why: |
There are infinite reasons to recycle, reuse, and reduce! |
| |
Recycle
In a lifetime, the average American throws away 600 times their adult weight in garbage.
Recycling an aluminum can saves enough energy to run
a television set for three hours or light a 100-watt bulb for an entire day.
A glass bottle can be recycled time and time again into another glass bottle or product, without any loss of quality. Glass is 100% recyclable. Our earth is not.
Re-Use
If every household reused a paper grocery bag for one shopping trip, about 60,000 trees would be saved.
If only 100,000 people stopped their junk, mail, we could save up to 150,000 trees annually. If a million people did this, we could save up to a million and a half trees.
The junk mail Americans receive in one day could produce enough energy to heat 250,000 homes.
Reduce
According to the EPA, over 380 billion plastic bags,
sacks and wraps are consumed in the U.S. each year.
Each year, an estimated 500 billion to 1 trillion plastic bags are consumed worldwide. That comes out to over one million per minute. Billions end up as litter each year.
Americans throw away 44 million newspapers everyday. That’s the same as dumping 500,000 trees into landfills each week.
