Summer Service Days

Project List for August 11, 2006

All projects will take place on the morning of August 11th. A community celebration and lunch will take place after the projects are completed at Pickleweed Park. Schedule for all projects:

Pickleweed Park- 50 Canal Street, San Rafael
Project Name: Garden Repairs at MCC
Activities:
Volunteers will help create a mural consisting of painted tiles and do some garden improvements at the MCC office in San Rafael. Half of the tiles will then be donated to the Nicosio School. Garden activities also include pruning, pulling, planting and watering of garden.

Directions:

Heading south on 101:

  • From 101, take the 580 East/Richmond Bridge exit
  • Immediately head to the right (Francisco exit)
  • Turn left onto Bellum at the first stoplight
  • Cross under the freeway
  • Turn left onto Kerner
  • Turn left onto Larkspur Street
  • MCC is first building on the left (corner of Kerner & Larkspur)

Heading north on 101:

  • From 101, take the Francisco Blvd. Exit
  • Turn left onto Bellum at the first stoplight
  • Cross under the freeway
  • Turn left onto Kerner
  • Turn left onto Larkspur Street
  • We are the first building on the left (corner of Kerner & Larkspur)
Project Name: North Bay Children’s Center Garden Improvements
(Please note: this location has been changed from the previously posted project at Manzanita Learning Center, 620 Drake Avenue, Sausalito)
Activities:
Volunteers will be participating in garden improvement tasks at the center.

Directions:

Heading North on US 101:

  • Merge onto Nave Drive toward Hamilton Field
  • Turn right onto Bolling Dr.
  • Turn left onto Bolling Cir.
  • Turn left onto Tinker Way.
  • End at 22 Tinker Way
Project Name: Invasive Snail Removal
Activities:
Removing Battilaria attramentaria from mudflats near Loch Lomand Marina in San Rafael.
Location:
Loch Lomand Marina in San Rafael
Where to meet:

At the far Eastern parking lot of the Loch Lomond Marina.

Directions:

From central San Rafael:

  • Take Second Street East, which turns into Third Street.
  • Third Street becomes Point San Pedro Road.
  • Go for 1.6 miles. Turn Right onto Loch Lomond Drive. Loch Lomond Drive bends to the left.
  • At the end of Loch Lomond Drive, make a right into the parking lot.
  • Make a quick left and follow the parking lot road to the end.
  • There will be parking available.
Special Instructions: Volunteers should wear clothes they don’t mind getting muddy, and bring a change of socks, shoes, and pants.
Project Name: Invasive Broom Removal at MMWD
Activities:

Volunteers will be pulling invasive plants from the area.

Heading North From San Rafael:

  • Take the exit toward Central San Rafael.
  • Stay straight to go onto Irwin Street
  • Turn left onto 3rd Street. Turn slight right onto 2nd St.
  • 2nd St. becomes 4th St.
  • 4th St. becomes Red Hill Ave.
  • Stay straight to go onto Center Blvd.
  • Center Blvd becomes Broadway Blvd.
  • Turn left onto Bolinas Road
  • Turn left onto Porteous Ave.
  • Turn right onto Wood Ln.
  • End at 139 Wood Ln. Pull in through the gate and park.
Project Name: Marin Headlands Improvements
Activities:
Volunteers will be participating in iceplant removal and litter abatement at Golden Gate Bridge overlooks.
Location:
Marin Headlands
Where to meet: Battery Alexander parking lot
Directions:

Heading from Marin County:

  • Take Highway 101 south, pass the Marin City/Sausalito exit and go through the Waldo ("Rainbow") Tunnel.
  • Take the exit for the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, the last exit before the Golden Gate bridge.
  • At the stop-sign turn right under the freeway to second stop-sign.
  • 50 Yards after the second stop-sign, take the first left to the tunnel to the Marin Headlands (you may have to wait at the red-light for up to 5 minutes).
  • Once throught the tunnel, follow signs for the Marin Headlands Visitor Center.
  • Pass the Visitor Center and continue up the road.
  • After the Nike Missile Site, make a right into a dirt parking lot, marked Battery Alexander.

Project Name: Invasive Snail Removal

Activities:
Community volunteers will do litter abatement around the community center, near canal, and around neighborhood. There is a possibly of pulling fennell as well.

  • Take US 101 South
  • Take the I-580 East exit toward Richmond Bridge/Oakland
  • Take the exit toward Francisco Boulevard
  • Turn Left onto Bellam Boulevard
Project Name: Invasives Removal at MMWD
Activities:
Volunteers will be pulling invasive plants from the area.

Where to meet:
Parking lot just past the Sky Oaks Ranger Station.
Project Name: Community Garden Repairs
Activities:
Repairing a mural in Community Garden, painting the garden shed, mulching the front enterence, and pulling french broom behind the garden.
Location:
Clarence and Mattie Boatman Community Garden
Directions:
  • Take US 101 South toward San Francisco
  • Take the exit toward Marin City/ Sausalito
  • Turn right on Donahue Street
  • Turn left on Drake Avenue
  • Turn left onto Cole Drive
  • Boatman Community Garden is right before 79 Cole Drive.
Project Name: China Camp Improvements
Activities:
Volunteers will participate in a beach clean-up and possibly do some trail maintenance.

Activities:
Volunteers will participate in several activities including litter removal, creek clean-up, cleaning grills, and basic trail work.
