Meet Vanessa Wyant (left in photo) and Suzanne Lundy (right in photo)…
MCC's March 2008 Corpsmembers of the Month
Supervisor: Teresa Bradley
Crew: Youth in Environmental Service (YES)
Length of time at MCC: 7 months
Reason Corpsmembers were selected: Vanessa and Suzanne are admired and highly respected by the students and staff of Marin Conservation Corps’ education department. Vanessa and Suzanne conceived and helped implement a plan to facilitate more integration between MCC programs and corpsmembers. They were instrumental in increasing the exposure of students to the math curriculum, and in March, they worked to institute a language exchange for English- and Spanish- speaking corpsmembers outside of work hours. Their energy, enthusiasm and creativity have helped to build a strong rapport among the corpsmembers.
Skills training received at MCC: As part of their yearlong AmeriCorps service and training, Vanessa and Suzanne have participated in environmental education lesson planning, classroom management, habitat restoration, native plant identification, native plant and wildlife monitoring, tool safety (hand and power tools), CPR/First Aid, Community Emergency Response Training (CERT), and civic engagement training.
Corpsmembers' favorite project: Both Vanessa and Suzanne agree that the steelhead trout monitoring training at Point Reyes National Seashore was among their favorite projects. They learned about its “spawning practices and [were able] to wade through a creek all morning.”
Favorite educational component:
Vanessa: “Touring the San Francisco Recycling and Waste facilities.”
Suzanne: “Learning about the native and invasive plants of the area.”
Favorite aspect of working at MCC:
Vanessa: “As an AmeriCorps member, I have the freedom to adjust the program as necessary to fit the needs of the community. I also have the opportunity to experience working with different governmental and non-governmental agencies through various projects with our community partners.”
Suzanne: “My favorite aspect of working at MCC is being outside in beautiful places and having variety in what I do, who I work with, and where I work.”
Corpsmembers' future plans:
Vanessa: “I plan to continue in the environmental education or habitat restoration fields after MCC and soon return to school to complete a graduate program in either the field of restoration ecology or natural resource management.”
Suzanne: “I plan to get my Multiple Subjects Teaching Credential and become an elementary school teacher. Then I can take my students on field trips with Students and Teachers Restoring A Watershed (STRAW) to restore riparian habitats!”
